The Armory Show 2011

Jason and I went to The Armory Show this past Sunday March 6th.  I was very happy that we made it out since it was pouring rain all day. The quantity of art was overwhelming and despite our best efforts to keep on a plan we were bouncing back and fourth from shinny thing to neon lights to vibrating colors. We only made it through Pier 94. Here are some of my favorite artists from the show.

Overlay Series: Early Photograph (Unknown Erotic Postcard); Color Acetate Red, Yellow and Blue; Brushstrokes; and Linen Canvas on Stretcher Bars
2008
Red, yellow and blue film gels and acrylic on linen canvas
49.875 x 71.75 inches

The super vibrant colors originally were what drew me to her work. The loosely layered gels produced different color combinations from different angels. I liked how the traditional and attractive subject matter let me focus on the treatment. I would love to have one of there in my house.

Dead Cheetahs and Shit
Mixed Media
16.5" x 23"

To me this work was interesting because it was politically and racially charged, expertly executed and made with materials you could buy at Walmart. It may have been the glitter but all of his work had an eerie manic vibe that contrasted sharply with the dark subject matter. I found it provocative.

Unknown. So maybe my favorite piece of the whole show, I forgot to take a picture of the wall tag. After more then an hour of internet searching, I give up, I can't find the artist.

This piece was an amazingly detailed scale miniature in the foreground that blended seamlessly into a photo background viewed through a lens. The effect was magical landscape through a peephole. It was naturalistic and fantastic.

I would highly recommended The Armory Show, it was fun and hip and I would do it again in a New York minute.
